Bull Elk in the Snow

On a bitterly cold December morning in 2016 this elk was running to see what the fuss was about. Maxwell supplements the diets of their big herbivores with "range cubes" nutrients and protein bound together with molasses (I call them candy bars). The blowing snow and white grass provides a striking contrast to the dark fur and eyes of the elk. While we think elk are mountain species (and indeed this Wapiti is descended from mountain elk), 150 years ago elk roamed the Great Plains with legendary millions of bison.
